Using AI

Dos and Don'ts of AI use

Do

Don’t

Check if AI is permitted in the assessment and how before you start

Assume AI is permitted and expose yourself to academic integrity problems

Use AI to help you understand the purpose of the assignment and give you hints about getting started – brainstorming phase

Paste the assessment question into AI and hope for the best! This can result in plagiarism.

Use AI to help you search for useful information sources

Rely on only the AI tool to give you all the information for the assessment task

Use AI to help you understand complex concepts in more simple terms

Assume that what the AI generates is the best or most sophisticated information

Check any references provided by the AI tool yourself

Assume the references are correct or even real!

Verify any information from AI with other sources to make sure it is correct

Assume all the information provided by AI is correct – AI can provide incorrect or biased information

Acknowledge whenever you have included AI generated text

Cover up using AI generated text by changing the wording to look more “human”

Use AI to proofread and provide suggestions for improvement using tools like Grammarly

Allow tools like Grammarly to significantly change the words or content of your assessment beyond spelling and grammar corrections

Be responsible for any work that you present as your own

Copy words or concepts you don’t understand

Use AI tools to improve your academic skills

Lose the opportunity to develop your academic skills by being over-reliant on AI tools

Keep your own “voice” in your writing by writing in your own style

Assume the language used by AI is better or “classier” than your own

Prepare for exams and quizzes by asking the AI tool to generate practice questions or flash cards

Forget to use your textbook and other resources provided by the lecturer before using AI to study

Think about how AI could be used in your future job or profession

Assume you will not require writing or research skills in the future
